The final countdown

It's the final countdown to our 150Voices event on October 4 at our Cathedral in Plymouth. It's not too late to book or to volunteer your musical services. This Saturday at 1500 hrs there will be a practice at St Mary's, Poole in Dorset. Please contact me if you are interested (either through the blog or by email plymouth150@btinternet.com).
See the links below for more information on some of the music we will be using to illuminate our liturgy.

Getting started

I met with the Poole music group on 16 August and we are in good hands. They have a fabulous resource of musicians and singers, a beautiful Church and many enthusiastic and willing helpers. Don't forget to check the myspace sites listed below in previous posts - look forward to seeing you in October !

On the Way

We are putting together our plans for October. It sounds a long way off but feels very near ! If you are interested in helping out with the music or the liturgy you can contact the department of formation at the Diocese who will be pleased to help or email me at plymouth150@btinternet.com

We now have our own myspace site which contains at least two of the pieces we will be using in October - sorry the production isn't what I would like but hopefully you'll get the idea.

And if you look here you'll hear the Creed like you've never heard it before (don't say thank goodness) - now just imagine 100 + voices singing it and you'll see why we will be using this.

Finally, download the following from iTunes/napster and you'll pretty much know what we will be doing !
What a friend I've found - Delerious (Also in the Source music book)
More love, more power - various versions on the web (Also in the Source music book)
Knocking on Heaven's door - take your pick between Dylan/Guns n Roses
Air I breathe - try the Hillsong version

Remember to email me with any questions and if you are in the vicinity of Poole, Dorset on the weekend of the 16 August, we will be having a meeting -let me know if you are interested.

The beginning

A select group of us have started the journey that we hope will end in October at the Cathedral for its 150 th celebrations. The precise nature of those celebrations are not yet known but the picture illustrates what can happen from small beginnings. Now we need help to germinate our ideas and help them grow. So thank you Becky, Sheila, Renate and Jacek. We will put our faith in the Lord and our young people to take us forward on our journey.

Gathering !

We have put plans in place for a first gathering to look at music for the cathedral youth event in the autumn. We are going to meet on Saturday 5th April at St Nicholas’ RC primary school in Exeter (Ringswell Avenue EX1 3EG). Further details will be available in due course, but we wanted to make sure you had the date so you could put it in your diaries. We’ll arrange to meet late morning and finish mid-afternoon to enable those who have to travel from afar to get home in time for tea ! We will be exploring musical ideas together and hopefully having a really good sing.

Please contact Becky if you would like to come.

You will be my witnesses

'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses.'
Acts 1-8

These words form the theme for World Youth Day 2008 and come from the Pope's message for young people throughout the world. We will also be using this message as the theme for Plymouth 150 - our celebration of 150 years of the Cathedral of St Mary and St Boniface. In preparation for this event we call upon young people throughout the Plymouth Diocese to witness to their faith by being part of these celebrations.

We are looking for committed Catholic Christians to help us organise our own celebration of youth in the Church and commemoration of 150 years of worship by people of all ages at our Cathedral.

Welcome

Welcome to Plymouth 150, a blog detailing our journey to the celebration of the 150 th anniversary of Plymouth's Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Mary and Saint Boniface.
This blog is intended to help share the ideas both liturgical and musical of the people of our Diocese in preparation for a huge clebration by and for our youth at the Cathedral in Autumn 2008.
We look forward to the year ahead in the hope that we can grow together spiritually and musically as we prepare for this celebration - we hope to have some fun too !
